Salt Laker spins far from home

Al Haworth, my best bud, local filmmaker, and inventor of the rabbit bike helmet has just set off on an enviable bike journey 350 miles through Japan, from Osaka to Tokyo, on a Fuji track. He'll then use the bike for wandering around the sprawling capital trawling for keiren parts before bringing it home to SLC, so start begging him for souvenirs now. The trip is a capstone to the intensive Japanese study he's been doing in Osaka for the last month or so. Al will then return home and set to work on the festival cut of Afterimage: The Art of 337.

Meeting w/ City Official to Discuss all-things-bike.

I am meeting with a city official, the Visitor Services Manager to discuss possible funding for bicycle related events. I have a few ideas, but need more.

I am under the impression that cyclists like to cycle, so I think an active event might be best, though I am open to explore a range of event ideas in this meeting.

This has the potential to really push the Salt Lake City bicycling scene forward if done properly, so please post your ideas.

Accident @ U-Bomb.

Picture 8.png

U-bomb, the sibling of Zoobomb, is an extreme sport and as a result can cause injury if not done properly..

This image is of the spilt blood from an accident that occured tonight during U-Bomb. One of the cyclist lost control of their bicycle and struck their head on the pavement. They are not in serious condition, but the incident has seriously woken us up. At the time of impact they were not wearing a helmet. As U-Bomb is an extreme sport at high speeds on unusual bicycles down steep hills and after this incident, we came to a conclusion that helmets ought to be required to U-bomb in the future. However, we would like as much input into the matter as possible, so please share your thoughts.

Autopsy: Heart of Darkness Recap.

Saturday brought us an grand kickoff to proper summer heat and hoolaganing on two wheels, an experience that's left me sweaty and tired and a little bit proud, but mostly I'm eagerly anticipating the things to come from this kickass little city. The Heart of Darkness Alleycat was a force to be reckoned with, and from 6:00 pm until late it dominated the city in its crusade for carnage and culture on the backstreets of SLC.

For me, the alleycat started fraught with last-minute scrambles: organizing the stop volunteers, baking cookies, buying beers, stashing bike parts. All went well thanks to the amazing efforts of our dozen volunteers.

I rolled up to the alleyway north of the gallivan and met 7-8 racers. They were quiet and maybe a little grumpy to be held up, but looked ready to race. I was a little disappointed to see so few people, but thought more would show up. I said hi and nipped across the street, where I guy I hadn't met before was sitting on a fix in front of the skating rink. "Are you meeting over there for the alleycat?" I asked, nodding towards the 8 people. He looked up, confused. "No, they're meeting up the other alley," he said, "I'll be over in a second." Huh?

I poked my head around the corner of Plum Alley, and met a sight straight out of a mind f**k co-directed by Sheldon Brown, Peter Jackson, and that guy who choreographed Quicksilver. Little plum alley, with its steep brick walls and adjacent carpark, was teeming with ripped and ready cyclists. 60 people showed up to race, and plenty more to spectate. Let the games begin.

Thanks to Derek Nielson for the photos

I'll let someone else tell the story of the race itself, as I wasn't privy to it, but I can tell you that as an organizer, in that opening moment where I saw all those crazy fixers (and racers, and tandems, and mountanbikers, and tallbikes) amped up and ready to rip through the streets of salt lake, my expectations for what this two-wheeled community can achieve were blown away. You rock. We rock. Let's do it again sometime.

I remember Chris Ginzton screaming into Disorderly for the win on a single speed at something like 40 minutes, a full 10 minutes faster than I did the course the night before, with the frame of the freak-bike balanced across his handlebars. And Phillip Mate's tale of woe where he got a freak-bike cable caught in his front wheel, causing him to flip spectacularly and win the helmet prize of Most Accident Prone, courtesy of Cyclesmith. J.J. of LMI got second, Colin Roe Ledbetter third in his first Alleycat. Adam with curly red hair was first fixed in 4th place.

Tate L. brought two friends with him from Vegas to race, and I accidentally gave Tim a wrong starting manifest but he still completed the entire race. Then there were Keifer and Diego, who paid to enter and then won best non-racers, for doing the whole course two-up on a 50cc 4 stroke scooter. Followed by water, cookies, tricking (including that cool guy from Saturday Cycles on a tandem) and an epic bout of foot down at Disorderly House for the finish.

Big thanks goes to Lindsey for ceaselessly spreading the word and helping with every aspect of the cat, along with Nicole Asslin (cookie master), Stan Hawks (graveyard creeper), Jordan Jones (chop-shop redneck), Seth and Tyler (chill hill icecreamers), Angie Maya B and Laura Decker (photo girls), Eric and Etta (creepy mystics), and Joe Thomas and Esther M (graffiti artists).

Thanks too of course to Disorderly House, they went far beyond in hosting and providing the racers with water, and all of us with a place to party.

And keep riding all, that was awesome.

FrontRunner : Bicycle

Picture 1.jpg

When FrontRunner was first introduced to Utah, I made a post worried about how FrontRunner would transport bicycles on its service. I finally got to experience the FrontRunner bicycle transportation system this week.

While far from ideal, the new system is an improvement upon standing with your bicycle, as done in the Trax system. Rather than stand with your bicycle, you take your bicycle to the south end of any of the cars and strap in your bicycle securely to the wall. This system allows two bicycles to be secured next to the wall.

I spoke to representative about the system, and he told me discussions were underway to take out a row of seats in the last car and replace them with a row bicycle racks across from the seating, as large numbers of bicycles commute daily on the FrontRunner, making the strap system inadequate.

The ride itself was very smooth, and UTA representatives were setup to answer questions and act as liaisons for the better half of UTA. I can't afford FrontRunner most of the time, but recommend it for random bicycle adventures up north.

Wanted: your close calls

Portland, Oregon started a posting where the bicycling community would share their close calls on bicycles in effort to bring awareness to the dangers that cyclists face daily in their community.

Salt Lake City, Utah cyclists your voice, too, needs to be heard. Please share your story in the comments are of this posting.

In your comment please include:

* The nearest cross streets of your incident.
* A short description of what happened.
* What neighborhood you’re from. (ie downtown, liberty park, sugarhouse, west valley, etc.)

Once we compile enough of these close calls, we can send them onto the city officials in an official letter.

Collective bikes make a difference

So I actually made it down to the Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective last Monday to volunteer. I haven't done that in a while and it was refreshing to go and work alongside some of the same old people (and some new ones too!) that I used to work with every monday there.

My task last monday was to build up a boxed huffy little kids bmx style bike. Yes, we normally wouldn't be passing out huffys but these were brand new and pretty cool (the gear shifter was like a car gear shifter! So sweet) so they were having us put them together for kids. I didn't think much of it when I was building mine up and chatting up a storm with some of the other people volunteering.

I didn't think much of it at all ... until today. I was on my way back from playing some lacrosse against the tennis wall at liberty park and I rode past a house of people that I often see outside hanging out. They are always happy but it seems like there are just way to many people in this family living in this one house. I've heard before that they are part of refugee program and have come here from Africa to escape the malaria outbreak. Anyway, these people always smile and wave as I ride by and the many children with them are always playing on the sidewalk. Tonight, however, to my superise, I wasn't the only one riding a bike when I passed their house. There across the street from me was one of their little boys on a SUPER SHINY brand new yellow bmx style huffy with a car gear shifter. All of his friends were running alongside him yelling and laughing. It was the hit of the night!

I waved and smiled. It's super refreshing to see my volunteer hours down at the collective actually making a difference to my neighbors and in my community. Amazing how that ripple effect works. I can remember my first bicycle like it was yesterday. It helped shape who I am and what my interests are today. My dad gave me a red Schwin with a banana seat and huge handlebars. Love at first sight:)

The Big Porn Tour 2 is Coming To SLC This Fall

Rev Phil accepted my stop motion offering of motion picture bicycle abuse as a good enough short to come back to Salt Lake City, so I fixed it up from the previous version and sent it 2 day fed-ex around midnight, as the Bike Porn 2: bikexplotation initial screening occurs on Friday.

I am not going to upload the final version. Just know it has better porn and bicycle action. Thats all everyone needs to know till October '08.

Sorry if your work didn't make it, but I imagine Rev Phil might still be interested in your bike porn. Visit http://bikeporntour.blogspot.com/, preferably when you aren't at work..

We will need to make this second tour huge. So get ready to volunteer, coordinate and create events surrounding the bike porn tour of vast proportions this fall.

cheers.

The U.S. Sent A Man To The Moon, It Can Find A Gasoline Alternative.

oilbaby.jpg

Few will forget the capstone of the U.S. society on July 20, 1969, an event which stood triumphantly on, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

The political driving force behind this commitment and the $30 billion dollar price tag was fueled by the space race and fear of Sputnik metalic creatures getting the Cold War edge. Today, we are fueled by the blood of the terroists in Iraq, in Iran, wherever the oil can be dug and still remain fueled by petrol.

Average gasoline prices in the U.S. have hit $4 a gallon, and while Britian, France and Germany pay nearly twice that amount, they also have invested vast resources in establishing alternative forms of transportation instead of tearing them out.

The time is now and today that the United States does not merely follow in pseudo alternative technology such as ethanol, but rather lead in its pursuits of exploring, discovering and distributing a realistic gasoline alternative.

We do not need, nor will benefit from more fuel effecient vehicles. The Model T Ford engine was introduced one hundred years ago this October and little has been done to improve upon this 10 mpg model. Even at 40 mpg we still are dependant on the same broken engine that ties us to being slaves to the oil industry. We need to divorce oil.

What a divorce it shall be! $50 billion dollars are spent on our addiction to oil yearly, while $18 million goes to line the pockets of our representatives and the entire society is structed around oil use from heating homes to making just about every bought product.

Despite these ties, it is imperative that we end this abusive relationship. We can start these proceedings by creating a national department akin to NASA that invests its resources in finding practical solutions to impractical oil usage.

Politically we can let the people know that the war on terror begins with a war against dependancy on foreign oil and the explotation of the people who hold that oil. Because like NASA, the people need a reason for having their money go towards a new science whether that be putting a man on the moon or fuel alternatives.

Sending a man to the moon was important, but being oil free may be one of the single most important decisions in the history of the United States.
