I am meeting with a city official, the Visitor Services Manager to discuss possible funding for bicycle related events. I have a few ideas, but need more.
I am under the impression that cyclists like to cycle, so I think an active event might be best, though I am open to explore a range of event ideas in this meeting.
This has the potential to really push the Salt Lake City bicycling scene forward if done properly, so please post your ideas.
how about a competition to promote a locally-built dutch city bikes, the winner of which would get a fat stipend to pump out a thousand or so.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that might be worth mentioning is stoplights that won't change to green unless a car shows up.
ReplyDeleteSome Dutch City Bikes would be sweet, too, though. Or English three-speeds for that matter.
I'd be down for more bike valet all over town! Just kidding, what I'd love is to see more families out there riding with us. We should have a family and children oriented event. Since it seems like we are mostly talking about cycling as transportation, so, road cycling- maybe an event where lay people could hear the benefits of having a road bike for transport over a mountain bike. I see so many people riding their mountain bikes for miles and miles and looking exhausted if I must say so myself. Maybe a turn around mountain bike to road bike for transport trade event? Who knows how that would even work. I'm just shooting ideas out. I feel bad for those mountain bikers who just don't know. (and i don't mean the peeps on thousand buck mountain bikes.. i mean the average joe who just... doesn't know.)
ReplyDeleteI'd question how useful encouraging MORE people to want road bikes would be. I think that mountain bikes with slick tires and with a commuter setup can make decent around-town bikes. I'm not sure if that's what you're talking about, in terms of 'turn around mountain bike to raod bike'. I'm all for making sweet commuter bikes out of mountain bikes, though.
