UPDATE! double feature: Tom black•ut -&- Ride Like A Pirate Day announcements

tommini.jpg

THIS is going to be an insanely great ride, in celebration of Tom's contributions as a cyclist/organizer for the salt lake city bicycle scene before he leaves us to be a missionary in Chile.

Come out and support him, bicycling and enjoy a bite to eat at the end of the course at Freaky Dees @ 7th East 2100 South.

Bring a fast light weight bicycle. It is not our intention to race, but rather, we enjoy riding together very quickly as a group.

All of the details of the blackout route are on the above map. Print it out in horizontal view and distro it, or keep a copy for yourself so you know where we are going to be riding.

Drop a line if you have questions.

Thanks.

I am handing out both these fliers, double sided on one piece of paper @ Midnight Mass. Watch for it, and print your own to distro/remember the events:

DOUBLE FEATURE: Blackout + PIRATE DAY Print Out

One Got Fat: Slayer Edition + Critical Mass, Alleycat This Weekend.

One Got Fat [video here] [wiki entry here] is a 1963 bicycle safety film.

Originally this music video was done by 'The Lamps - 20 Inches of Monkey',[video here] borrowing some video from the original and adding their own.

I simply replaced the music with Slayer - Live Undead, leaving the Lamps/One Got Fat footage.

Room for rent in FTP girly bicycle house! GIRLS ONLY

We are looking for a lady to join us (3 other gals) who is responsible and respectful and has their life moderately together. Common sense is a must.

The room isn't HUGE but comes with a loft bed frame (if you so choose) that really opens up the space. I lived in it for 6 months and had enough space for everything i had including a desk, dresser, and small couch. Big closet and cool shelves built into the wall. There is a storage unit in the basement for anything extra so that's a plus. Huge kitchen, two enterences, and two bathrooms (you'd be sharing with one other person). There is carpet in the room but the whole house outside of bedrooms is tiled with new pretty tile. We have a large living room with plenty of space for bicycle parking... which reminds me- any cyclists or bike commuter will be considered first ;) We split the utilities between us four, there is high speed internet, the deposit is $200, and the lease is month to month as long as we get a months notice before you go.

We are looking for someone progressive, over 21ish, and self-reliable. Must be ok with some house rules (for cleaning and stuff) and, like I said, be respectful and think of others. This house is also drug and alcohol free. We are not LDS but we just don't want to deal with the problems that arise from drunk room mates and their friends. eek that sounds mean but it's true.

no smoking or pets.. we do, however, already have ONE curious cat so, just a warning.

Rent= $290/month

alive.

Picture 1.jpg I am fat, bloated, consumed by the skin that holds me together. Lifeless, thoughtless, I drift through the evening a walking, living zombie.

Then I see it hanging on the wall. Asking me politely, then suddenly commanding me. I take the bike down and grab those bike things - the ones you feel you need to ride, but really you just need to ride - the mp3 player, earbuds, etc.

My mind is still cluttered, I am barely incommunicable. My wife after years of this understands my grumbles. Understands that I need to get out, to get away from the grip of a dead stale inside and venture outside to expose myself to being alive.

Walking down the hallway, Caution Bicycle in tow all I care about is the song on the ipod and a rare chance to see other cyclists around the city that I might know or might care to know. Exiting the building I walk to the street, it too a lifeless void seeking out something anything. We both have energy somewhere. I get on my bicycle and pedal not yet absorbing the energy of the streets, but aimlessly wandering to find it.

Like a moth to flame I turn on second south and aim my bike towards the Gateway. I assume in this quiet night that perhaps something, anything, if it so existed, would be going on there. Quiet. Still. A few aimless wanders and one mindless driver that swings their door wide open, making a gun shot go off into my sleepy cadence. I swing wide, dodging the metal doom and still find it hard to be alive even in the face of becoming a door prize.

North. It seemed logical. A place of adventure and mystery. While Salt Lake was familiar, North Salt Lake still held a bit of that, "Am I going to ride into a giant pothole on this road?" surprise. Something to make you feel alive. Then hills. Capitol hills. I rode up. I kept riding up. I was starting to feel alive. Sweat dripped. Gears lowered. My front tire wobbled as gravity acted against me and I promised to thoroughly kick its ass in order to feel alive.

Breathing hard, I descended down behind the Capitol. I decided to try gravity hill and all the scenic of the area surrounding it while perhaps catching my breath. I tried descending down it, but as many locals know gravity hill promises to really mess with your head and perceptions of gravity, in that when you go down it you are going up it and when you go up it you are going down it.

At some point, crickets, the quiet, the peace of the ride surrounded me. I flipped the switch on my mp3 player to off letting my earbud dangle freely on my chest. While it felt appropriate to drown out a city - a chorus of crickets, of quiet, of wheels spinning, of stillness being drowned out by Grandmaster Flash seemed almost sacrilegious. (though I may need to consult the Church of the Big Ring on this one.)

I peaked. It wasn't a hard push, or a finish line that did it. It was being alone in the vast world, alone with my bicycle that did it. Nothing too complex.

There was that wall. The point where you don't think you could go no more. But my wall wasn't on the '50th mile' or even that hill climb but rather at home. When I had to pull myself from laziness into riding my bicycle. It helps to realize how alive you feel when you ride. It also helps to realize that the rush isn't always just from the speed, but from simply riding.

I got home and I told my wife more mumbling, more lifeless words. I felt myself sinking into my old self again. Then I looked at my bicycle... and the journey began all over again.

SLC Bike Chop Shop welder donation form is now @ top of saltcycle.com

I put $50 bucks into the welder fund, and am hoping that other individuals of the community that want to weld bicycles will contribute.

With the ability to weld bicycles more easily in a community shop, this will create an insanely amazing bicycling community with even more possibilities. Imagine the fleets of freak bikes, the custom frames of sheer speed and the fixed gear creations that could be pieced together under a welder..

Lets make this happen.

volunteers needed to start a slc bike chop shop.

Freak bikes are freak'n awesome. Nay, any bicycle weld mod is freak'n awesome. With this in mind I would like to set out to create something to create welded bicycles of various splendor. I would like to create a Salt Lake City Bike Chop Shop. Currently I am in discussions about possible locations to house this project, but more readily, I need some contributions for a welder:

Picture 1.jpg

120 Amp, 230 Volt MIG and Flux Welder For use with or without gas. Welds mild steel from 22 gauge to 3/16".
* Comes with welding torch, two tips (0.030", 0.040"), grounding cord with clamp, brush/hammer,
handheld welding mask and manual
* Duty cycle: 20% @ 115 amps, 40% at 75 amps, 90% at 50 amps, 100% at 30 amps
* Welding current range: 30-120 amps
* Draws 15 amps @ 230 volts
* Maximum open circuit voltage: 36 volts COST w/ SHIPPING: $262

I would like to house this at DBR's place as its a great location bridge between the city and county, and not far from the SLC Bicycle Collective. However, if we do place it at this location we will all need to help him build a welding shed/workbench, along with any other tasks it would take to find a home for the welder.

So we need a welder, and we need to build a place for it. If no one replies, no one contributes, then this project will be considered dead. However, if enough interest is generated we will create the Salt Lake City Bike Chop Shop and bring unimaginable bicycle culture to the Salt. Look for a paypal donation link and drive to collect funds if there is enough interest.

Reply if you are interested in contributing work and/or money for this project.

Legacy 2: august midnight mass sequel.

legacyride.jpg

The Zebra Rider enjoyed the ride so much the first time at the August Midnight Mass, he wanted to ride it again, and so did I since I missed that Midnight Mass portion. Come ride with us into the night as we explore the Legacy late into the Sunday night, some of for the first time many of us as a sequel. A lighter bicycle is recommended along with blinkees/bicycle lights.

SaltCycle : Events Not Working, Here Is The Fix.

I have been having trouble with getting SaltCycle: Events to function properly, so SaltCycle: Events is not going to be functional anymore.

However, you are not out of options:

You can subscribe to Saltcycle and get all of the postings from Saltcycle.com in your inbox. On all major events, a new posting is generally created. While this will give you more email in your inbox, it will also keep you more informed. Finally, it will consolidate all the information going out from saltcycle.com.

You can get a google calendar account, then add the Saltcycle Calendar from saltcycle.com , then:

**Get email notifications of upcoming events.

**Get sms text messages of upcoming events.

There are several other options, but most of them are available when you get a screen name for google services.

questions, comments, concerns?

post them.

Ladies night at SLC Bike Collective

womens night flyer 01

Salt Lake to Salt Lake by way of Morgan County

Calling all SaltCyclers and newcomers, regardless of experience or hip status. I want to have a SaltCycle contributors and readers ride soon, where everyone involved in this great journal of Salt Lake Cycling can get together face to face and enjoy some time outside on our bikes, challenging each other and building more relationships! So! I propose this ride:

This map shows the ride from my new residence in Kaysville, but is easily adaptable to starting from anywhere in Salt Lake and/or meeting up with the group along the way. As you may notice, it is quite a long ride, with some hairy hills right in the middle, but I know we can do it!! I did a ride similar to this one yesterday, from Kaysville to Liberty and Huntsville and back, and I could only imagine how more fun it would have been with friends.

At 93.8 miles, this is just short of a century without the registration and cost and organization of a real century ride. Some details about the ride:

-Moderate elevation gains and losses from Salt Lake through up to Morgan and East Canyon, only ascending 1,000 feet in the first two-thirds of the ride.

-The only challenging climbs are in Emigration Canyon just past East Canyon Resevoir, the summit being 7,500 feet (3,000 above Salt Lake City).

-Brakes are reccomended for the descent from Little Dell Resevoir, down Emigration Canyon to Salt Lake City.

So, if anyone has any suggestions or comments or 'aye's, post here or email me at longskull@gmail.com.

Thanks everyone!!!
