SLC Cranksgiving Recap 2008!

Prescott superman

Cranksgiving was a total success, with 33 racers and a whole mess of food gathered for the hungered peeps of SLC. Here's a quick photojourney through the race, for more pictures click here!

Riders gathered and prepared for destruction. Cory, on the mini bike, rode all the way from the Gallivan to a single grocery store, bought a whole ton of groceries, and headed straight to the collective, only managing to crash once on the way. Good on 'im!

The first stop was the avenues Smiths. after mobbing Nicholas the Pharmacist for manifests the racers were free to go wherever else they pleased, all the other stops were down the hill.

Greg got nailed by a truck who was distracted by racers and didn't see him, moments before this picture was taken. He went flying, truck didn't stop. The truck was at fault.

It was Mr. Hartlieb's first day on a fixie, they finished building up the sweet ol' Paramount a couple minutes before the race and the brake wasn't even hooked up yet to boot. So what did we do? Sent him up the steepest hill in the city and hoped he made it down! Well done sir.

2/3rds of the podium
Patrick Beecroft of LMI (left) took the race and had an eight minute lead over the rest of the pack. Prescott (right) took second!

Jeff took third by buying a turkey, which allowed him to skip a stop. Sneaky bugger!

Food Bank here we come!
All told, we got a ton of food!

Eight Turkeys
And a ton of turkeys.

Hope everyone had fun, thanks to everyone for racing, Jonathan Morrison for encouragement, Chris Ginzton for planning the race, and our hearts go out to the guy who broke his wrist at the beginning, get well soon!

Cranksgiving + U-bomb: a wounded success!

Picture 13.png

AlleyCat: Cranksgiving (11-22) - Wrapped chain for lock around bottom tube of mini, chain came loose gripping pedal, vaulting me over the bicycle and smashing me into pavement. 13 year old boy made sound of "ohhhhhhhhhhhhh!" as I dragged me carcass from the flow of traffic in between two parked cars. I went on to win the Cranksgiving illegally.

I suppose this was better than a broken arm....

If you have pictures/video of Cranksgiving please post them and then send Saltcycle the linkage.

U-Bomb: 9th East 3rd South (11-23) - Kemmer in his drunken stupidness side swipe/rams me with his mini bike resulting in me crashing into pavement. Minimal damage done due to multiple layers. I went on to complete the U-Bomb down the parking garage, and as Kemmer screamed "U-Bomb!!!" I screamed "Assss-hole!!!" and rammed him with my bike. I hope he hurts when he becomes sober.

I am not one to crash often - nor Alleycat, nor U-Bomb had taken me previously with wounds for over a year... and yet in a weekend I have occurred more battle wounds than I had the entire summer 08.

More photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/31257830@N04/

Its time for a vacation. On to D.C. for me. U-Bomb will continue as scheduled without me - next week 7P Salt Lake City Public Library "BIKE RACK". Do watch out for drunken Kemmer - he is a wild child. We heart regular sized bikes too - ride whatever you feel like riding.

The event this next sunday, the 30th.

Tomorrow! Cranksgiving!

Matt's Cranksgiving Drawing
Matt Delporto did an awesome drawing for the 'cat, but we got it too late for the flyer. Still, mad cool.

Come one come all to the coolest freakin' charity ride out there, alleycat style! get food on some plates and a bit of warmth in your brisk pre-turkey saturday.

Idea and poster stolen from The New York Bike Messenger Association, sorry about the bad photoshopping!

**Edit: alright, so I worded things poorly. We're not eating anything, we're gathering food for the Utah Food Bank and donating it. It's no problem if you're vegan or otherwise dietarily restricted, cuz we ain't eating. Sorry about the confusion :)

Bicycle Coverage at the Daily Utah Chronicle

Local Rider Bella writes a TON of articles on alternative transportation for the Chronicle. I'm really impressed at how regularly and professionally she covers bicycle topics. Her stories cover a wide range, from a unicyclist commuter to veggie oil shuttles to locking advice.

You can see the full spectrum of her articles here.

My favorite is this one on midnight mass, because it brings up some of the issues Zed's discussed before about speed and hooliganism. And it quotes me a lot :P.

Bike Tripod A Go.

biketripod.jpg

Photographer-Cyclists of Salt Lake City have long talked about the possibility of fastening some sort of a tripod for photography. Camera shake while bicycling is an issue because you have to constantly keep your head in the right place (not look down or to the side too much). Often we looked to the instructables as inspiration.
I set out to overcome this issue and create a Bike Tripod that worked not just for my photo camera, but also for my video camera. Thus, the helmet cam, would not be an option because it would only work for video camera.
Additionally, helmet camera shake is generally atrocious unless you have the skills of Lucas Brunelle and the power of duct tape. I have neither.
So to the bike mount. I decided along with having a bike mount tripod, I wanted to be able to use it for multiple bicycles as I ride a mini, a road bike and a tall bike at various times. I also concluded that if I was able to get the low down (mini), regular(road bike) and high(tall bike) above angles for different events it would make the footage more versatile and interesting.
Hijacking my wife's bike basket I took it apart, promising to get a better greater one soon. I took it off the basket, and sandwiched packing bubble wrap in between the parts to act as a buffer for camera shake. Then, I mounted on the front of it where the basket used to be, the head of a tripod. I mounted it with screws and gorilla glue as an extra precaution. The tripod itself came with two quick releases, so I attached one to my Canon Rebel Photo Camera and the other to my Panasonic Video Recorder.
Attached together, the bike tripod also has a level on it so you can adjust the bottom support for various grades according to where you want to shoot.
I also intend on using the lanyard as a sort of safety hitch to the bicycle handlebars.

I am doing a test with the Panasonic this afternoon as I am U-Bombing the route for Mormons VS Hipster Kickball III & I will be sure to share the video when it is processed.

*sorry if the writing on this one sucks, i am a rider, not a writer.
