Tomorrow! Cranksgiving!

Matt Delporto did an awesome drawing for the 'cat, but we got it too late for the flyer. Still, mad cool.
Come one come all to the coolest freakin' charity ride out there, alleycat style! get food on some plates and a bit of warmth in your brisk pre-turkey saturday.
Idea and poster stolen from The New York Bike Messenger Association, sorry about the bad photoshopping!
**Edit: alright, so I worded things poorly. We're not eating anything, we're gathering food for the Utah Food Bank and donating it. It's no problem if you're vegan or otherwise dietarily restricted, cuz we ain't eating. Sorry about the confusion :)

It's official, I picked the worst time to try out veganism. Unless there will be vegan options...

ReplyDeleteThe vegan/vegetarian option seems to come up all the time in regards to cranksgiving. I'm organizing the race in NYC this year (my second year running it), and last year, there was a heated online debate about whether or not people should be "forced" to buy non-vegan food. My response was pretty unsympathetic, since it's for the homeless afterall. This year, since I'm inherently sympathetic, I'm going to try & create a vegan option on the manifest, but it's pretty much my lowest priority.

Please add this to SaltCycle: Events Google Calendar + if you can create an event on Facebook for it that would help get the word out.
ReplyDeletethanks.
I'm not opposed to buying non-vegan or vegetarian food for the homeless so if there will be no actual food consumption on my end, there's no need to do anything special. We're gathering food anyway, and I'm definitely not going to discriminate against anything anyone gives us. Greg, I'd like to correct your statement:

making things difficult since 1987.
hey thanks for dropping in Ken!
ReplyDeleteand thanks for letting us use the image. I think we'll keep ours pretty simple, which is easy because the Foodbank has a list of items it wants, so we'll just grab things off the list and make sure we have a variety of equally priced things on the offer. Gonna be fun!

Vegan options are nice. On the other hand.. my experience with the homeless running FNB is that they often turn their noses at free organic vegan feasts and head over to McDonald's. If you don't mind spending more money you could always get the organic version at the least..if it was any concern.
ReplyDeleteMy experience with the homeless and FNB in Connecticut was overall positive, they were happy to get our food, and even if they were initially "vegetarian food!!!" after they tasted it the changed their mind. On the subject of vegan thanksgiving stuff, just buy cranberry sauce or corn, there are plenty of options of vegan food for thanksgiving--not that you would know if from thanksgiving at my parents'..."we have potatoes for you."
ReplyDeleteHow did Cranksgiving go? I didn't feel right about going since I'm quite unemployed right now...
ReplyDeleteDidn't mean to be negative about FNB. In Missouri it was a huge deal. I was just trying to put out there that you could go organic with the alleycat items.
It went well. I beat everybody on Mini bike. Sort of.. Well.. I made it to one stop (Albertsons), bought everything and went to the final stop - the bike collective. Man, that mini ride can kill your knees good. Davey took pictures too.. look for them!
