The Road Respect Tour rolls into Salt Lake City this Saturday (6/9), at the downtown Farmers Market at Pioneer Park. Join the event at 8 am, where all participants will receive free healthy, local snacks from the Farmers Market. Mayor Ralph Becker, SLC Police Chief Chris Burbank and SLC Transportation Director Robin Hutcheson will each give a short address on the importance of sharing the road; Tommy Nankervis of the Competitive Cyclist racing team will be in attendance.
Experienced cyclists will then join the Road Respect Riders from Salt Lake City to Logan. Families and those who want to stay closer to home can enjoy a special one-mile bicycle tour of downtown Salt Lake led by Mayor Becker and pro cyclist Tommy Nankervis. Road Respect tour riders will start with the kids, and then continue north on their way to Logan. Following the kid's ride, the Tour of Utah will host a "Ride for Fun, Ride for Life" event at Bingham Cyclery from 9-10:30am, promoting bicycling as a fun way to stay fit and healthy.
8 am: Welcome - The event will start with the Road Respect Tour gathering at the southeast corner of Pioneer Park, at the Farmers Market stage near the bicycle valet parking. The Farmers Market will provide local granola and snacks to all attendees.
8:30 am: Speakers - At the soundstage, Mayor Becker, SLC Police Chief Chris Burbank and SLC Transportation Director Robin Hutcheson will each give a short address on the importance of bike safety and sharing the road. Mayor Becker will recognize the Echelon Project and pro cyclist Tommy Nankervis of the Competitive Cyclist racing team, who will be joining the mayor to lead the Kid's Ride He will also direct all the attendees to Bingham Cyclery and the Echelon Project "Ride for Fun, Ride for Life" event following the Kid's Ride.
8:45-9:00 am: Kiddical Mass Kid's Ride - Immediately following the speeches, there will be a short kid's ride, 1 mile in length, starting and ending at Pioneer Park, led by the Mayor. The Road Respect tour riders will start with the kid's ride, and then continue north on their way to Logan, on 300 West: experience cyclists are invited to join them on this ride. The kid's ride will return to the northeast corner of Pioneer Park, finishing between 9:00 and 9:15. At the finish, all participants will be directed toward Bingham Cyclery and the "Ride for Fun, Ride for Life" event promoting childhood health through bicycling.
9:00-10:30 am: Ride for Fun, Ride for Life - The Tour of Utah's Echelon Project will be holding a "Ride for Fun, Ride for Life" event at Bingham Cyclery, to promote cycling as a fun way to stay fit and healthy. The event will offer bike fitting, nutritional information, "Mike and the Bike" activity books for children, maintenance advice, as well as photos and signatures from pro cyclists. The Echelon Project is a cooperative effort to fight childhood and adult obesity, with partners including the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Utah, the Utah Department of Health, the Play Well-Play Safe Foundation, and the "Mike and the Bike" children's book series.
