The course has been extended from last year's 409 miles to this year's 550 miles. More King of the Mountains and Sprints checkpoints will contribute to a more competitive and exhausting race. Levi Leipheimer, Rowland Hall graduate and 2-time defending champion, has been training in Salt Lake City and Park City to get to know the courses better and to train at altitude. Stage 3 and 4 of this August's Tour of Utah will finish in Salt Lake City, the former in Research Park, and the latter downtown on 300 West in front of the Energy Solutions Arena.
The Tour of Utah's queen stage, from Park City to Snowbird, will be on Saturday, August 10th, instead of its usual position at the end of the race on Sunday. This change may encourage more people to attend. The Tour will end on Sunday in Park City, also a Tour first.
