UTA's Bike Bonanza draws thousands for annual Bike Month staple event

The annual Bike Bonanza, organized by Curtis Clayton of the Utah Transit Authority, drew thousands to Gallivan Plaza last Friday, May 18th. Many were there to pick up their packets for Saturday's Cycle Salt Lake Century, others represented organizations, shops and agencies such as Cutthroat Racing, SLC Transportation Division, SLC Bike Company, Wasatch Touring, Saturday Cycles, Bicycle Transit Center, UTA, Clear the Air Challenge, and more.

Attendees enjoyed free pizza from Papa John's and Creamies ice cream bars. The raffle at 6:30 included several bikes from local shops and other great prizes. The event brings together riders of all types and backgrounds. Most who attend take as much free swag as they can before leaving, and many who we talked to said that they thought that without the free stuff, the event wouldn't really be worth attending.

While many who attended and supported the event through booths and tents were ready to leave by 7 PM, the event did not end till 8, and many arriving at the tail end of the Bonanza weren't satisfied with the rush to pack up and leave.

Travis Slagle, who came with his family, said, "If you advertise an event lasting from 4 PM to 8 PM, don't start packing up at 7:15. My family and I (which includes my wife who is 8 months pregnant and me) biked three and a half miles to the last show of the trials guy and a free frozen yogurt Creamie. Overall impression: underwhelmed."

The Bike Bonanza this year included a raffle, free helmets to kids, a trials/stunt show, and other giveaways. Pictures below are from the RideUTA.com website.
