Utah jumps from 31st to 13th in LAB Bicycle Friendly State rankings

The bicycle-friendly award gods seem to be smiling down on Salt Lake City, and Utah as a whole, this week. Earlier this week, Bicycling Magazine ranked Salt Lake City the 26th most bicycle-friendly city in the United States. Yesterday, the League of American Bicyclists, the oldest and most respected national bicycle advocacy organization in the US, announced that Utah moved from 31st to 13th most bike-friendly state in the nation.

The rankings were determined by analyzing states' use of infrastructure and funding to improve cycling conditions, educational programs on safe cycling and enforcement of bicycle friendly laws. Overall, Utah scored very high in all categories save evaluation and planning. Remember, this analysis is at a state level. If you think the results don't really reflect what bicycling and bicycle transportation planning in Salt Lake City is, you're absolutely right. Think bigger.

For a complete list of the 50 state ranking, see more below the break.

The League called on Utah decision makers and citizens alike to...

  • Adopt a statewide Complete Streets policy,
  • Adopt federal funding project rating criteria,
  • Increase overall ridership,
  • Establish a statewide bicycle advisory committee, and,
  • Adopt a statewide bicycle plan that addresses the five 'E's.

Overall, Utah did quite well, and the fact that Salt Lake City has increased its funding, infrastructure implementation, and education programs for bicyclists definitely plays a part in the League's decision.
