New signs indicating basics rules and guidelines for safety and courtesy were installed late last year at the request of Salt Lake City Transportation Division staff. These new signs, said the press release, "aim to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians... The signs clarify that all uphill road travelers, including cyclists, joggers, and walkers, must travel on the creek side (south) of the road. All downhill bicycle travel must take place on the hill side (north) of the road." Further, the new signs are also mounted on brand new black posts that look a bit spiffier than the old ones. The speed limit in the canyon for all users remains 15 MPH.
"City Creek Canyon is a jewel in Salt Lake City," said Water Resources Manager Laura Briefer. "Its accessibility invites us to escape the urban environment and recreate in the mountain. But while enjoying the canyon, we must all remember to be considerate of others and follow the rules of travel."
Now that "summer" has hit, summer time rules for access are also in effect. As has been the tradition in years past, bicyclists are permitted in the canyon on odd-numbered days (when cars are restricted. Yes, it is a lot of fun). Private motor vehicles are permitted on even-numbered days. Because SLC's Public Utilities Department operates the water reclamation plant halfway up the canyon, service, city, and maintenance vehicles may be present at any time.
For more info on access to and rules in the canyon, see the City's website.
