As a part of the new restriping design for Indiana Avenue that was recently chip sealed, there is a new intersection design that, though admittedly is not the best practice or best possibility, is safer and more convenient for cyclists than ever before. Take a look at what Becka Roolf had to say about it:
In the past, Salt Lake City has striped intersections with bike lanes and right-turn "drop lanes" as in the aerial photograph below (300 E heading north at 600 S). This made it feel as though the bicyclist was encouraged to be cut off by the motorist.

Over the winter, we looked at revising the standard design for this configuration, so it now appears as in the rendering below (800 S heading west at 900 W). We looked at quite a few other references in developing this guide. With some slight changes, this has now been striped on the street as part of the 800 S / Indiana cape seal and bike lane redesign.

I'd be interested in any input that you have on the design - please go ride it in real life before you send your thoughts.
Thanks!
Becka
The new design looks pretty sensible to me. I recall biking on the old one you'd always have to do a pretty sketched-out corner check as you traversed across the loooong transition, I think the clearer marking and the shorter path are the best improvements.
