U of U Bike Parade

The U had a nice Earth Day celebration today filled with all sorts of local vendors and activist groups and happy people and sunshine. The U Bike Collective (extension of the SLC Bike Collective) set up a stand, helped passersby with some tune-ups, and sold 9 or 10 bikes that the SLC Bike Collective provided.

JT (the main energy behind the U's collective) and Cliff (a student who has been
volunteering the last several weeks)

Read on for anti-bike theft stuff...

Then Mayor Ralph Becker lead a bike parade around campus. The weather was perfect, everything was beautiful and nothing hurt.

Another cool bikey thing: The U Police have started something great this semester. They set up at events like this and do free bike registration using those new QR codes. They also gave out free kryptonite U-locks and cables to any student who registered today. They also bought a gps system and have a bait bike set up somewhere on campus. If the bike gets clipped and moves more than 5 feet it alerts the police and they can follow the thief. They hope to catch some of those stock-houses near the U that they've found before. It's great to see the police system encourage bike commuting and theft prevention.

Summer is coming and I love bikes. Life is good.
