Salt Lake City Department of Transportation is proposing a greenway project that will extend the length of 200 South from the University on the east, to Downtown on the west. This greenway will consist of a complete road diet, including a massive center-lane median shared use path (bicycle and walking), similar to the projects in Washington D.C., and New York City.
The difference here is that Salt Lake City streets are humongous and we can fit much more in the 90'-130' than other cities can in a street of standard width. Salt Lake DOT has developed a proposal for this center-lane, protected cycling and walking thoroughfare with much anticipation and hopes that the project will continue to fruition.
Becka Roolf, Salt Lake's Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator, in announcing the new greenway, said that it would be up for discussion in tomorrow evening's (April 13) Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee meeting (open to public) in which input and suggestions will be accepted. "There will also be an open house on Thursday, May 12, along the 200 S corridor. Details of the open house are being finalized. The MBAC meeting is the first public presentation of the Bicycle Greenway but is not the only public discussion that is planned!" said Roolf regarding the newly announced proposal. Plan on attending this meeting as well as the open house in May to be able to add your support to Salt Lake's efforts in increasing safety for cyclists and pedestrians, as well as for drivers of motor vehicles.
MBAC meeting begins at 5:00 PM at the City/County Building downtown (451 S. State St., west of the library) in room 335 on the third floor next to the Mayor's office, and is held every 2nd Wednesday of the month. Please add our Google Calendar to your current Google account to receive reminders about this meetings and other bicycling-relating activities happening throughout the city.
Any comments on the project should be sent to 200South@slcgov.com. Consider emailing your comments to this address in lieu of leaving comments on the blog.

ReplyDeleteLove the idea.
the biggest thing is that it works for both casual riders and commuters. In some cities (paris, tel-aviv, san-francisco) the transitions between greeways and normal traffic can slow bikes down considerably and put you in that awkward 'where and I supposed to be' situation. It's a great idea though. Excited to see how people use the green space. The Downtown and U bike colletives should set up little fix-up booths from time to time! Or all the for-profit shops could do little volunteer rotations to advertise.
