BYU Tech makes 2.75 pound bike frame out of Carbon Fibers & hand-wonven Kevlar strings. While I can't even afford a carbon frame, let alone even dream of a kevlar frame, this technology is simply unbelievable. Car manufactures always drivel on about more horsepower, faster acceleration, and bigger, bigger, bigger. So, it is nice to see something aiming for the other direction - stronger, lighter and still powered by 100% humanpower.
Especially amazing is that the 2.75 pound frame is able to hold 300-pounds.
Now, I just need to wait 10-15 years for the price to be reasonable.. at $11,995, I could buy 11 top end bicycles for the price of this single ultimate power beast.

2.75 lbs until you ride through some mud, then it's an $7k 5 lb frame! Neat tech and all, but ugly and stupid expensive. I'm sure we'll see tons of them rolling the park city trails in the spring.
ReplyDeleteAlso there are a lot of other carbon frames that weigh about that much, so it's really no big deal. Did you read this?

good link to the article on fatcyclist. i really enjoyed it. i really am out of the loop when it comes to all the latest weight of bicycles and associated components. mostly ride, for ridings sake on a bicycle.
ReplyDeletei actually like the web-like design for some reason.... something different in the realm of bland same frames, though i am more of the neopunk bicyclist myself.
Clearly these people have never had the pleasure of riding a 35 pound Dutch bike.
