The Clear the Air Challenge, a Utah-wide, month long event that aims to reduce the amount of motor vehicle miles traveled and thus reduce air pollution, is beginning on August 1st and will run till the 31st. The Challenge is open to all travelers of all types of vehicles. Per the Challenge's website, the contest aims to include all who are "excited about smarter alternatives to driving alone. Whether you're completely new to TravelWise strategies, or a seasoned veteran, we encourage you to participate."
The Challenge is pretty simple. Here's how to participate and help clear Utah's air:
1. Register for the Clear the Air Challenge
2. Open your Challenge Tracker
3. Set trip goals for each travel mode (car, bike, bus, etc.)
4. Log number of trips and mileage for each mode regularly
5. Go for gold. Even if you don't "win", you win.
You can reduce air pollution caused by transportation by choosing the following options, as part of the Challenge, or come up with your own alternatives: Bicycling or walking, e-traveling, trip chaining, teleworking, using public transit, carpooling, or working a compressed work week. Definitions of each of these travel wise methods are available on the "Travel Options" page and on your dashboard/trip tracker.
The Challenge will keep track of your total trips saved, miles saved, emissions reduced (in pounds of CO2), energy saved (in gallons of gas), and money saved.
To sweeten the pot, the Clear the Air Challenge has worked with its supporting partners and participating businesses and organizations to give away great prizes, including July 30th's prize from Backcountry.com, a new Civilian brand Ramble bike. Click the link to enter the contest.
Our friends at BikeProvo.org produced this excellent film to encourage people to step out of their cars and onto their pedals for this year's Clear the Air Challenge and hopefully for good.
