The Week in Review

A few stories from this week's bike news caught our attention. If you have more that you'd like to share, please email us via the contact page.

The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin released a study titled "Bike to Work Week, Madison: By the Numbers" which highlighted Madison, WI's record breaking and quantitatively impressive and encouraging Bike to Work Week, which took place between May 14-18.

Mike Hall, 30, set a new record for cycling around the world. The North Yorkshire resident finished back in England in only 92 days after traveling 24,900 miles (18,000 of which were biked). Hall's attempt eclipsed Alan Bate's 106 day record set back in 2010. Hall averaged 200 miles a day. I thought this comment on the NPR coverage of the story was fitting and funny,
"He will need to cut 12 days off of that next time before they can make a movie."

Spy Optics revealed a behind-the-scenes look at their latest commercial which aired during the Tour of California. Mike Montgomery (the rider) acts as the stunt double for Matthew Busche (Team RadioShack-Nissan-Trek), doing big tricks on a Specialized road bike that are normally seen on a mountain or BMX bike. Take a look here.

Paddy Cahill and Philip De Roos, in their first in a new series of "Cycling With" videos, "went for a cycle with Anne Bedos", who is the founder of Rothar, an organization in Dublin, Ireland, that has recycled and saved from the landfill thousands of bikes, trained up dozens of volunteer bike mechanics and even won the prestigious Irish David Manley Social Entrepreneur Award.

My favorite quote from Bedos' "Cycling With" interview, speaking about how some believe that Dublin should just copy the example of Amsterdam or Copenhagen, is, "We need to come up with our own solution to our own problem." Full video below. Note: Video contains some coarse language and semi-vulgar euphemisms.
