Recently, Dijana Alickovic and I met up and had a conversation about volunteering locally and helping the needy. We decided that the Burrito Project offered us a great opportunity to do just that. After doing a little digging, we came to the conclusion that what had existed of the group in the past had fizzled. Essentially, we had to start from scratch. We contacted some people doing the project in other cities and got some advice. We also spoke with our friends, who helped us put the whole plan together.
Through various contacts, we were able to partner with a local entrepreneur. For the time being, this individual has been supplying our burritos, which are prepared in a commercial kitchen. We have been running 300-500 burritos every Thursday night with a group of around 4 to 8 bicyclists. The Project serves the greater metropolitan area of Salt Lake City and outlying pockets where the homeless and hungry are known to live and congregate.
More below on how to get involved and contribute to the Burrito Project, as well as videos from other projects.
In the near future, we anticipate increasing the number of people we serve, and therefore the number of volunteers and burritos needed for each ride. So far, we have been using panniers and backpacks or messenger bags, but hope to get our hands on some trailers with coolers and insulated bags at some point. Any kind of support from corporate sponsors and concerned citizens is greatly appreciated.
