Provo Bike Patrol organizer shares his thoughts on the new River Trail patrol

Bike Patrol in an interview below. (Photo: Deseret News)

Me:  How long ago did you come up with the idea?

Lee Houghton:  I think I came up with the idea about two months ago. I can't pin point any "ah ha" moment. I think it just developed over several weeks.

Me:  How do you manage or organize your volunteers?

LH:  We have someone manage a Google calendar and remind people when their shift is scheduled either through text message or email. These are some issues we are trying to develop. It's kind of a mend and bend process right now.

Me:  How was your experience with the Provo Police Department?

LH:  I can't say enough how great the Provo PD is. The Chief of Police is who really championed the idea. They have provided so much support.

Me:  Did you try to go through anyone else before the PD?

LH:  I initially worked with the Mayor and he suggested that the police department be involved. And the rest is history.

Me:  What does the future hold?

LH:  The future is always the big question. We have been putting efforts into getting businesses on board and maybe sponsor teams. We are also looking at teams patrolling by foot. I hope to get to the point where there is a team on the trail at any given time between 7:00 AM till dusk, seven days a week.

Me:  Is this something that you would like to see happen in Salt Lake City?

LH:  I think the Jordan River Parkway Trail could benefit from a similar program. Here in Provo, Provo City owns 90% of the trail, whereas in Salt Lake City there are several different municipalities managing different parts of the parkway. But I would be interested in discussing this with any city that would like to develop a similar program in Salt Lake.
