Mayor Becker leads international group on bike tour

A few short weeks away from this year's mayoral election, Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker took time out to lead a bike tour through Salt Lake City.  On Friday, forty-two participants from the American Collegiate Schools of Planning Annual Conference (hosted this year in Salt Lake City) joined Mayor Becker to explore the bikeways and sights of Downtown and Central City.

Hailing from far-flung destinations including Norway, Switzerland, Japan and bike meccas such as Portland, Boulder and Davis, participants were excited to spend the afternoon viewing our city by bike.

The tour followed green lanes through downtown, before heading up to Memory Grove Park at the base of City Creek Canyon.  Mayor Becker, a long-time former resident of the neighborhood, discussed historical and personal perspectives on the City Creek community tucked at the base of the Wasatch Front. He highlighted the ability to bike directly from Downtown into the depths of the Wasatch, as well as the closure of City Creek Canyon to cars on odd-numbered days.

Later destinations included the South Temple Historic District and Liberty Park (with an extended stretch along new shared lane markings on 800 East.)

Participants were impressed by the inviting neighborhoods and Mayor Becker's willingness to lead a bicycle tour in the midst of an election season, a testament to his abiding passion for improving bicycle travel in Salt Lake City.
