200 South Greenway On Hold

The center-lane bicycle greenway proposed for 200 South is currently in a holding pattern.  As consultants and city engineers iron out the design, city council has delayed voting on the project.  The current version of the design provides space solely for bicyclists, a change from original versions that included a pedestrian path.

Here is the latest summary from City Bike/Ped Coordinator Becka Roolf, in the transportation division report distributed yesterday:

"U TO DOWNTOWN - Bicycle Greenway on 200 S

The 200 South Bicycle Greenway project is currently awaiting a funding decision from City Council.  Design has continued to evolve for the Phase 1 project, with bicycle traffic signals, bike boxes, and a bicycle-only centerline pathway in the design.  If the City Council does not appropriate funds in July, the project would not be able to be constructed until next summer, at the soonest.  The Council may also decide not to fund the project at all."

Originally slated for a decision this week, the city council has not re-scheduled a vote on the project.

On another major bike-related project, the council approved funds a few weeks ago for a bike/ped path on a former rail right-of-way adjacent to 900 South, extending from 700 West to Redwood Road.  This will be a major connector through the west side, scheduled to break ground early this fall.  The City Planning Division is working on a plan for local economic development on land surrounding the trail.

  1. I was walking to my car and passed by a building on 500 South across the street from the library. Posted in the window was a flier about a bikeway on 300 South, from the University to the Intermodal Hub. It looked exactly like the bikeway on 200 S, except that it was one block down. It said that 300 South is preferred because there are no bus routes on that street (in addition to a few other things I can't remember). I tried to look online but couldn't find any information on this. I was wondering if you knew anything about it. Also, although the bikeway is intended for 200 S, has the option of 300 S been looked at at all (because it looks descent to me, although it may get a little crazy once downtown is hit because of all of the parking in the middle of the street along most of Broadway)?
