A roadway project will close 800 South at the railroad crossing (600 W) starting June 2nd. The closure will last approximately till June 22nd. This poses a problem for riders and commuters that use 800 South as a corridor from the University of Utah and downtown to get to the west side and the Jordan River Parkway Trail entrance at ~1000 West.
Be advised, this will not be open even to cyclists during these dates. See Salt Lake City's new Bikeways Map in order to plan a more suitable route without adding on too much time to your ride. There are symbols on the map indicating all trail access points for the Jordan River Parkway Trail as well as all signed and paint-separated bike routes in that area as well as the city as a whole.
Option #1: Turn south once you reach 600 W and head one block south to 900 S. Turn west again onto 900 S till you reach the trail entrance at ~1000 W. This detour route parallels 800 S and does not add time or distance to your commute.
Be advised that neither 500 S, 600 S, 700 S, 1000 S, 1100 S, or 1200 S has through access over or under the freeway. Thus, for the time being the only options are to use the 900 S detour, or head north to the safest crossing at 200 S.
Anyone who has found a great detour route, please post here so that others may benefit as well. Thank you!
