About 30 people showed up at the start on time and throughout the race the attendance increased to about 35 only to trickle back down to 26 finishers. Pretty good, SLC!
Right from the gate racers were continuously kept in the dark about where they were going, or who they would be impressing with their super-hipster knowledge of music... Fresh out of Plum Alley, everyone sprinted to Market Street to recieve their first manifest, which if doneproperly, was a nice route circumnavigating downtown buying unheard of food stuffs and asking about super expensive 32oz soy lattes.
Upon finishing the first manifest, racers were prompted by either Jake or Luke to tell them about a super-indie-underground-new wave-indie-punk band that they have never heard of to get the second manifest... not an easy task. Now the bread and butter. The second manifest is where things got complicated... gun shops, bike shops, coffee shops, all on a "downtown" manifest with a number of stops within sight of each other. Truly a navigation nightmare.
Again, staying in the dark, little did the racers know that the half sheet that was deemed as the second, and last manifest, at one time had yet another half sheet with the second second manifest which took racers plummeting down the backside of capitol hill.
Finally after biking a huge circle around SLC, slicing a finger in half, riding up and over the capitol, and all the way south to Brian's warehouse, Gary triumphed!
That's right! Gary Hurst shall henceforth be named Salt Lake City's King of the Hipsters!
As follows, the rules state that in three months another bike event will be held to crown the new king and knowing Gary, we all better start training...

Also, I should have it be known that even after proof-reading the manifests several times, I still screwed it up. I listed a stop at the Park Cafe as 1300 E 640 S whereas the Park Cafe is actually at 1300 S 640 E... woops!
Sponsorship stuff!
Check this out... Everyone that came out to race got a prize, for reals. Not only did everyone get a prize, there were enough left over to award the volunteers (that were still around) for being awesome! Speaking of those people, thanks Jake, Luke, Krisha, Chetti, and Peter for helping out and Brian for letting a flock of sweaty hipsters hang out in his warehouse!

...also, there is already another alleycat in the works. Think we can beat last summer's "alleycat-a-weekend" record? I do.
Nice video!
ReplyDeleteGary's alleycat is going to be brutal; I get butterflies in my stomach just thinking about it.
ReplyDeleteDima will you be back for it?
ReplyDeleteMost likely, but I will not know for sure until the end of April.
