SaltCycle Under Construction. Grand Re-Opening January 2009.

Saltcycle.com has hosting space. This means a more community oriented Saltcycle.com.

To make this happen, I am shutting down the old site temporarily, and will completely re-open with the new saltcycle.com January 1, 2009.

..But that will just be the beginning. In order for Saltcycle to grow with Salt Lake City we will need input on how to make saltcycle better + your contributions.

Share the word with the cycling community. Saltcycle isn't gone - its being reborn, removing its training wheels to achieve greater heights.

Salt Lake City-based photographer Keith Carlsen snapped this month's cover photo of local bicycle evangelist Brian Price, surrounded by mock road signs created by Mayor Rocky Anderson's Bicycle Advisory Committee, of which Price once served as the chairman.

Carlsen photographed Price at his warehouse, Point Six Percent Productions, the original home of the Salt Lake Bicycle Collective, using a Holga-a vintage plastic film camera originally made in China in the '60s. Intended as a toy camera and given away as prizes at American fairs and carnivals, the camera quickly became a cult classic among photographers for its unpredictable and artistic results. "Light leaks, vignettes and from-the-hip angles separate Holga images from the technically precise and often homogenous world of modern-day digital photography," says Carlsen of the medium.

A collection of his Holga and Diana camera photographs will be on display in large format at a gallery showing entitled "Ho Gwong & Diana," hosted by Alchemy Coffee from Friday, December 5 (opening night reception 7-10pm) through January 8.

Thrashed on Thursday.

3101325347_872762314f.jpg

First, my apologies. Sometimes the fixed gears get the best of the cyclists and well, they can't stop. So the group didn't stop long at Estes, and as a result we may have left some people behind. I am still learning about Thrash'n Thursdays, as I didn't organize it, but if I get details I will post them.

So the details. This week we did meet at ESTE Pizza on 166 East 200 South - but it was only brief that the group stayed at ESTE. They quickly rode to a parking garage after meeting up. If you are ever left behind and you know I am at the event, please call me. My number is on my facebook account under
Friends->Phonebook and I will give you the detail of where the group is located.

The Thrash'nThursday consisted of parking garage games of FootDown, then TrickComp then BikePolo. BikePolo being the raddest.

Mayor Ralph Becker and Mayor Peter Corroon Encourage Salt Lake County
Residents to Donate Generously to Local Food Pantries During "Food
Ride" Competition with Utah County
Mayor Becker to Participate in "Food Ride" from Provo to SLC with Provo Mayor

SALT LAKE CITY- Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker and Salt Lake
County Mayor Peter Corroon are urging all residents of Salt Lake
County to give generously to the Utah Food Bank between now and
December 13, as part of a friendly competition between residents of
Salt Lake and Utah County.

The Mayors are hoping everyone will give to Salt Lake County area
food pantries in the spirit of generosity and friendly competition
between the two counties. Donations can be dropped off at any food
pantry, Jiffy Lube or Smith's location.

On Saturday, December 13, Provo City Mayor Lewis K. Billings will
bike from Provo to Salt Lake City to make good on the challenge the
two mayors made when they attended the BYU vs. UofU football game.

As mayor of the losing team, Billings will bike approximately 50
miles to Salt Lake City to deliver a donation for the Utah Food Bank.
Mayor Becker will join him for the ride. The two mayors are using the
event to encourage the public to donate to local food banks in their
areas, calling the event a "food ride" rather than a "food drive."

The "Rivalry Food Ride" will begin at 11 a.m. on the north steps of
the Provo City Center at 351 W. Center Street and will end at
approximately 4 p.m. on the east steps of the Salt Lake City and
County Building at 452 S. State Street. The public is invited to
join the mayors for any part of the ride.

25 Mile SLC Bike Tour: Saturday, April 18, 2009, 6:00am (Course Map)

the SLC Marathon website blurb: The Salt Lake City Bike Tour was the first of its kind in Utah! The 25-mile Bike Tour offers biking fans the opportunity for a non-stop ride through the most scenic and spectacular parts of the Salt Lake Valley.

the SaltCycle Team blurb: Salt. Salt Lake City needs it. So over here at SALTCYCLE.COMmunity have decided to gather our bicycling community in a manner that most of the community can agree upon - Freaks. We love the bikes, tallbikes, longbikes, minibikes, monstertrikes and all the likes. We love the decorations, clowns, bunny- raccoon-frog-pig-helmets, caution cone helmets, face paints, streamers, blinkees and shiny gleamers of all sorts and arrays.

So with that we ask you SaltCycle Community to join our team. While it is encouraged that you to ride a freak bike, (one that can maintain an average speed of 15 mph) we just really want people dressed freaky. Think full moon ride in the daylight. Flavoring a once normal Salt Lake City Bike Tour into a SaltCycle Salt Lake City Bike Tour.

Here is the registration cost:

Entry Fee for Bike Tour

$35 April 20 - December 31, 2008

$40 January 1 - April 14, 2009

$45 April 16-17, 2009

(+$3 processing fee.) (.... so my total was $38.63) (UPDATE! IF you choose club - other, they will discount the price $5 - so choose club-other for SaltCycle Club)

I have ran into some technical difficulties registering as a team, but am working through them. However, you can register as an individual and when the team function is available, I will add you. Register here:

•do not attempt to register from http://www.saltlakecitymarathon.com, as the link is broken.

•do choose Club - Other to save yourself $5.

FELLOW TEAM SALTCYCYLIANS: When I hear news on how to register a team, I will post it here. Just lock in that $38.63 $33.63 club deal before the end of the year. Also, please comment once you are registered so we can have a head count and distribute enough of the free SaltCycle Team Salt Lake City Bike Tour 2009 shirts.

gcal details.

A link has been added to the top right of SaltCycle.com that will act as a search for all things Join Team SaltCycle for the Salt Lake City Bike Tour 2009. Click it to find anything about the Tour.

Cyclist Seriously Injured!

-anyone know who this fella is??!

Posted On: December 4, 2008 by Kenneth L. Christensen
Bike and Car Collide in Salt Lake City, Utah: Bicyclist Seriously Injured

According to KSL News, a bicyclist was riding down a hill in Salt Lake City the evening of December 3, 2008 near 1300 East and 800 South when a car failed to keep a proper lookout and made a left-hand turn in front of the bicyclist causing the car and bike to collide. The man on the bicycle was seriously injured when he was thrown into the van's windshield. He was transported by ambulance to the hospital and is in critical condition.

The news report says that the bicyclist may have been traveling fast down the hill, but that requires further investigation and ultimately does not matter. The driver of the van is clearly responsible for failing to yield the right of way and for failing to keep a proper lookout. If the insruance company for the van fails to accept 100% liability, the bicyclist would be well advised to contact an experienced Utah Bicycle and Pedestrian accident attorney.

More Daily Utah Chronicle coverage

Our friend Bella Bravo at the Daily Utah Chronicle wrote another article about this city's awesome bike scene—some of you may remember her showing up to Ubomb and Critical Mass this past week.  I also happen to work at the Chronicle as a page designer and had the privilege of gazing at a few of your smiley bikey faces as I worked on the page in today's paper with the article and lots of photos. If you're around campus today you should pick up a copy!
Here's a link to the article and audio/photo slideshow online: http://dailyutahchronicle.com/news/riding_the_critical_mass
