SLC Bicycle Collective Metal Shop needs to be a community effort to survive.

The SLCBC Metal Shop

is an idea that will bring more bicycles, more interest and teach cyclists brand new skills in welding and metal modification in relation to cycling never possible on such a grand scale in the Salt Lake City Community.

However, it will die, without support.

While donations are welcome, contributions of welding supplies or even great discounts will be the determining factor as to whether the SLCBC Metal Shop opens its doors on the west back side of the SLC Bicycle Collective. (two garage door bay areas dedicated for Metal Shop)

Two main needs: WELDING SUPPLIES and a SEPARATOR WALL 10 feet high, 12 feet long for the welding area made out of cheap materials. (If you know how to make a cheap up to code wall, please contact me ASAP.)

The final need is to get a quote on electricity to the backroom. But lets worry about the two main needs first.

Initially, I believed we could open in November. That seems too close, but I do want to open the doors THIS winter. However, I can not do this on my own, nor do I want to open this shop with my efforts alone. The bicycle collective has not survived by the efforts of one individual, and the SLCBC Metal Shop will not only survive on my will alone.

We need leaders for this project. Organizers. I am stepping up to the position of organizer, but others are needed. We need to have regular meetings. We need to have goals. We need community support. If you are interested we can hold our first meeting this coming Monday, and further clean the shop.

A wiki site for the SLCBC Metal Shop has been added here:

I want more support and organization before we go the Mailing Lists and ask for help from the SLC Bicycle Collective, so please join me in efforts to make this more official and our dream. Start by introducing yourself and your skills:

Let me know you are interested.

best regards,

zed.
