After walking my bike around and picking up everything I needed I headed over to the check-out line. There was one woman in front of me unloading her basket and, as soon as she saw me, she just HAD to make a snide comment. She goes "Interesting, I've never seen someone bring their bicycle inside before." Now this might not look like a nasty remark when typed but her tone of voice was pretty condescending. Like my bike was going to give her some crazy un-treatable disease or something. I was pretty surprised a her comment and so I just smiled and said nothing. The funny thing is that, in my surprised state, I hadn't noticed the kid with a giant downhill bike who had rolled up right behind me in the check out line. He heard everything the woman said and, immediately after she finished her sentence, he chimed in "Now you've seen two!". I still kept quiet but smiled and give him knucks for sticking up for me. The lady grumbled something under her breath while paying and took off.
My turn to check out. I rolled my bicycle behind me and sat on the top tube while the cashier calculated my total. While she was doing that I finally spoke up. "Can I tell you how much I love you guys at Wild Oats? Thanks so much for letting me bring my bike in." The cashier paused what she was doing and turned to me.
Ain't that the truth? I was so happy I wanted to seriously hug her. I wish the grumblin' lady was there to hear that. Take that grumblin' lady! What a cool cashier and what a cool place to spend my dollar. Anyway, I just thought I'd plug them and share the story.

I'm sure she wouldn't have had a problem had you been in your new Mercedes-Benz SUV going around the store. ;) I have never had anyone ever say anything to me and I am in there several times a week with my bike. It has to be hard driving an SUV and trying to save the environment at the same time, I might be a little bitchy towards others as well...especially if they aren't paying 3.60 for mid grade.
ReplyDelete"Now you've seen two!" [snicker] Good on them for giving you props for riding your bike there.
ReplyDeletei have actually riden my bike inside of the smiths on 5th e. and the one on 8th s. and not a single word was uttred to me. ofcourse i have been called a habitual line stepper, i expected some one to say something to me or even go as far as to kick me out, but to my surprise i left without insident. i've been to wild oats but the iles seemed a bit narrow to ride in so i just walked it on the rear tire. i did get a lot of smiles though!
ReplyDeleteThanks Collin!
