um, how does 'silent' not translate into 'normal or uncommunicative' to unaware motorists?
I'm a little confused about the effectiveness of this ride as far as raising awareness is concerned. I am appalled and saddened by cycling deaths, however, and I'm glad people are doing something in response to it.
DBR, you yourself said it best when we had that extensive conversation on midnight mass and how everyone acted so energetic, that is, that bicycle rides are dynamic and have a wide range of riding styles (the yin-yang of mass as you called it).
Some would say the loudness of Critical Mass or the speed of Midnight Mass makes people less considerate of cyclist. I think all of the rides have a purpose and strengthen the community in different ways.
Some pour liquor on the ground for their dead friends, we place tires and ride in a moment of silence.
